  • Attributive and in the genitive. Designating (the result of) a hearing test in which a vibrating tuning fork is placed with its handle on a bone of the skull until its sound can no longer be heard, and then is moved close to the ear, when the sound is normally heard again.

Origin

Late 19th century. From the name of Heinrich Adolf Rinne, German otologist, who described a form of the test in 1855. With Rinne's experiment, Rinne's test, etc., compare German Rinne'scher Versuch.
