A largely Muslim city in Bosnia and Herzegovina south-west of Sarajevo, the chief town of Herzegovina; population 111,116 (2008). Its chief landmark, an old Turkish bridge across the River Neretva, was destroyed during the siege of the city by Croat forces in 1993; its rebuilding was completed in 2004.
