The whole thing was covered all over in what looked like an outsize version of moss stitch, and the back was a series of rounded surfaces rather than flat.
In addition to adding beads, I've also added a moss stitch border, and my version will be a stole, knitted from the bottom up.
One point to note is that it works well with garter and moss stitch.
