It is a place of great contrasts from the arid salt pans, sandveld and scrub of the Kalahari desert to the huge water wilderness of the Okovango Delta.
Burning enables growing of crops in three difficult environments: acid soils, strongly leached soils of the rainforest zone and highly weathered plateau sandveld soils of the savannas.
Livestock should be relocated from the delta to the sandveld, the report recommends.
As Wilson remarks, ‘re-establishment of woodland on properly de-stumped sandveld was notoriously bad.’
