A river port and industrial town on the Danube in southern Hungary, close to the borders with Croatia and Serbia; population 19,129 (2009). It was the site of a battle in 1526 in which the Hungarians were defeated by a Turkish force, as a result of which Hungary became part of the Ottoman Empire.
