An area of marshland in western Italy, on the Tyrrhenian coast south of Rome. It became infested with malaria in ancient Roman times, and it was not until 1928 that an extensive scheme to drain the marshes was begun. Several new towns have since been built in the region, which is now a productive agricultural area.
