(1892–1971), Hungarian Communist statesman, First Secretary of the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party 1945–56 and prime minister 1952–3 and 1955–6. After the Communist seizure of power in 1945 he did much to establish a firmly Stalinist regime. He was ousted as premier by the more liberal Imre Nagy in 1953.
