Late Middle English; earliest use found in Guy de Chauliac's Grande Chirurgie. From post-classical Latin melissa from ancient Greek (non-Attic) μέλισσα bee, so called in allusion to its attractiveness to bees, probably after Hellenistic Greek μελισσόϕυλλον in the same sense.
