A former region of Poland which extended northwards to the Baltic coast and separated East Prussia from the rest of Germany, granted to Poland after the First World War to ensure Polish access to the coast. Its annexation by Germany in 1939, with the German occupation of the rest of Poland, precipitated the Second World War. After the war the area was restored to Poland.
